A prodigious Israeli poker pro from Israel named Rafi Amit is continuing to make waves in the poker world and is currently the leading high stakes cash player on PokerStars with $1.99 million in profit for 2011.
The PLO and o8 specialist with the screen name “refaelamit” first started playing on the site in January this year and his graph has shown a steady increase in profits ever since. A couple of days ago, Amit added another $101k to his burgeoning bankroll playing $50/$100 PLO 6-Max games and $50/$100 heads-up, to go way ahead of his nearest rival Andreas “Skjervoy” Torbergsen up $1.2 million this year.
For those of you not familiar with the young talent, Rafi Amit first came to prominence on the poker scene after winning a WSOP bracelet in 2005 at the $10,000 PLO Championship for $511,835. Later, picking up yet another bracelet, this time in 2007 at the $1,000 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball for $227,005, Rafi Amit now boasts live career tournament earning of $950,398.
However, it is online where the Israeli pro plys his trade and the internet phenomenon had won $3,591,245 playing as “howisitfeellike” at Full Tilt Poker’s cash games before making the move over to PokerStars. Now a rising star of the site’s high stakes cash game, Rafi Amit is poised to continue taking the poker world by storm.
Earlier on in his career, Rafi Amit soon outgrew the Israeli poker scene and travelled frequently to the United States where he started playing $4/$8 games. However, despite his enviable skill at the game, his decision to play poker soon met resistance from his family and, as he explains:
“In Israel, if you’re a poker player, it’s like you’re a drug dealer. My family was like, ‘You’re losing your money, you’re losing your mind.”
As you would expect, things have moved on since then and Rafi Amit now finds himself at the very top of the world’s biggest poker site.
